In 1988, Cristina Hoyos Panadero was 42 years old and on the cusp of launching her new dancing company. After a long and successful career as a flamenco dancer, choreographer and actress, she had decided to start anew with a vehicle of her own making. This accomplished Spaniard decided to hold her new company's inaugural show in the Rex Theatre in Paris. There is therefore a sense of pleasant symmetry when she returns to share the latest developments of her art. She was last here in 2000, so it has been some time since she last presented her work on the Paris stage.
Ballet Flamenco Andalucia is her curtain call, and here, surrounded by 26 dancers, musicians and singers performing works inspired by the poems of Lorca, an audience will immerse itself in the spirit of Andalucia and the heart of this dance of gypsy origins.
'Romancero Gitano' is a work of F. Garcia Lorca, and is considered one of the significant Spanish literary works of the 20th Century. It is a celebration of gypsy culture and its contribution to the spirit of Andalucia. The poems, set in the cities of Andalucia, reflects the suffering of a people who live on the margins of society, persecuted by the authorities. Mixing gypsy characters with Saints, characters taken from the bible and personifications of natural powers such as the moon, is heavy with symbolism.
The heart of Lorca's work combines with the energy and passion of Flamenco, and the purity and simplicity of the Ballet Flamenco Andalucia, resulting in an ambitious production.

The Tango Pasión group have put together their Ultimo Tango show and brought it to the stage in Paris. The purpose of the piece is to trace the history of Tango through the lens of Argentinian Bars, but while a worthy attempt is made to draw the attention to this aspect of the show, everything fades into the background (in a few rare cases, thankfully so) in comparison to the sheer brilliance of the Tango exhibited through a number of demonstrations, performed by dance couples, that take the breath away, each leaving a different accent to the tango, a flavour of the individuals. This masterful demonstration will leave the audience looking for Tango lessons, and probably disappointed when they realise the sheer dedication it takes to bring this level of perfection to one of the most intimate and beguiling dances of them all.
Highly recommended, available until January 8th. |

The Spectacles des Colporteurs is an airborne choreography animated by seven virtuoso athletes. In combination with the Wildmimi Antigroove Syndicate, their performance brings together music and movement to form a spectacle goes beyond mere technical mastery to truly defy gravity. The piece is autobiographical in nature, and tells the story of Antoine Rigot, who had a serious accident six years ago, and has returned to create this emotional and spectacular backdrop against which the artists perform.
We urge you to book quickly as every date but Thursday is already fully booked - these are the last places. |

In 2004, Laurent Beretta won the Grand Prix de la Magie de Monte Carlo. Since 2006 he has been developing a show that blends magic, dance and literature (specifically, quotations from Oscar Wilde) in which he performs with a dancer (Cecile Medour) and which lasts an hour. This show is called Paradoxes and was first unveiled at the Festival d'Avignon in 2007. It has since been at the Theatre Trevise in Paris, and the last show will be on 27 December 2008.
The title of the show, Paradoxes, makes reference to the theme - a world populated by the Paradoxes of Oscar Wilde. Various critics have referred to him as a magician-dancer far from thebeaten path, crafting illusions and in search of beauty in a world inhabited by the Paradoxes of Oscar Wilde.
