Hedwig and the Angry Inch is a 1998 rock-musical about a fictional rock band with a trans-sexual East German lead singer. It is one of those pieces that garners a mystical pied-piper-esque following of groupies and aficionados in the same manner as the Rocky Horror Picture Show. The rock and roll music of the piece is in the style of Iggy Pop, David Bowie and other glam-rock icons of the 1970s and early 1980s.
Hansel lives and dreams rock music, living life vicatiously through rock idols such as David Bowie and Lou Reed. He transforms himself into Hedwig, in the hopes of crossing the border surrounding East Germany and penetrating into the outside world in the company of an American GI, but things do not go to plan. With no country, outrageously attired in a powdered wig and makeup, Hedwig seeks to find his way through rock and roll. More than a musical, the cult following this piece has generated is caused in part by the effect the musical has on some of its fans - touching and emotional, the story of Hedwig, funny and outrageous as it is, also contains a number of emotions to which all can relate.
