Sabine WeissSabine Weiss is a Swiss photographer chose her art form and direction in life at the tender age of 12.  By the age of 22, she had moved to Paris and was working as an assistant to the photographer Willy Maywald.  Her photography focuses on the use of natural light and she has a strong preference for the black and white medium, as can be seen in the picture opposite, the Sortie du Metro, possibly her most famous work since it sold for €11,500 in 1995.  She did not believe in the photographer as an artist, but rather in the photographer as a witness, capturing an essential truth in the moment.  Robert Doisneau said of her work that "The scenes, with their unpresupposing appearances, have been captured with a deliberate intent at precisely that moment of disequilibrium where what is commonly accepted is called back into question".

Her photographs are all now part of various prestigious collections, and the collection at the Maison Europeenne de la Photographie is one among others.  Despite multiple publications honoring her work and worldwide recognition of the quality of her legacy, Sabine Weiss remains a discreet and largely private person about whom little is known by the general public.
